Academic Excellence and Leadership

At Silver Lake Intermediate School students are encouraged to put 100% effort into their learning and to do their best academic work. We recognize strong student achievement in a number of ways:

Honor Roll:

Students in 7th and 8th grade who receive a grade point average of 3.3 for a trimester and have no Ds or Fs are listed on the trimester honor roll. Students receive a certificate in their report card indicating honor roll status. The honor roll list is published in local newspapers each trimester.

High Honor Roll:

Students in 7th and 8th grade who receive a grade point average of 3.7 for a trimester and have no Ds or Fs are listed on the trimester high honor roll. Students receive a certificate in their report card indicating high honor roll status. The high honor roll list is published in local newspapers each trimester.

National Junior Honor Society:

The Silver Lake chapter of the National Junior Honor Society began with the opening of our doors at Silver Lake in 2009.

Students in 7th and 8th grade are eligible to become members of the National Junior Honor Society when they have earned a grade point average of 3.75 for the first two trimesters at their grade level. Eligible students apply by completing an application and fulfilling the other requirements necessary for membership. Students are rated on character, leadership, citizenship, and service by adults and teachers. The application, rating forms, and other requirements are evaluated by a faculty council consisting of the advisor, principal and other faculty members.

Students who are accepted into membership participate in an induction ceremony where they are given their full membership benefits.  As a member of NJHS, students are expected to complete fifty hours of service a school year and be active in numerous service projects held at Silver Lake throughout the year.

Presidential Academic Awards:

The President's Education Awards Program is an effort by the U.S. Department of Education to recognize outstanding educational achievement and effort. The program consists of two awards, the President's Award for Educational Excellence and the President's Award for Educational Achievement. To receive the Excellence Award, eighth grade students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above during seventh grade and the first and second quarters of eighth grade. To be eligible for the Achievement Award, students must show tremendous growth in achievement overall or in a particular subject, demonstrate unusual commitment to learning despite obstacles, or demonstrate exceptional achievement in the arts. Teams of teachers select Achievement Award winners. Students receive a certificate signed by the President and a letter from him. A list of students receiving Presidential Awards is published in the local newspapers.

Out of Level Standardized Testing:

While enrolled in the intermediate school, students who score very well on Wisconsin Standardized Tests can be eligible to take ACT or SAT tests usually taken during high school. If you are interested in this opportunity for your child please contact the guidance office for more information.
