An announcement was made today by the Overture Center in Madison, Wisconsin regarding the 2013 TOMMY Award recipients. The Overture's TOMMY Awards program is an educational initiative that honors and celebrates excellence in musical theater production among area high school students. Musicals of participating school are reviewed by a panel of educators, theater experts and industry profession. The award winners will be featured in an awards ceremony on Sunday, June 16 at 6 p.m. at Overture Hall in the Overture Center. Tickets are currently available. 

If an award is given in a category it means that all of the reviewers who saw the production deemed it outstanding in that category.  

OHS won the following awards:

Outstanding Musical - For the Outstanding Musical Award, all areas of Oklahoma! were rated as Outstanding, therefore a Tommy Award will be given to your entire directorial staff including:

As part of a project called The Young Performers Initiative, Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) will be recording the 2013 TOMMY Awards Ceremony. The resulting television program will feature excerpts from the June 16 ceremony and will be broadcast later in 2013. Watch for more announcements in the coming months.

This year TOMMY Awards are again participating in the National High School Musical Theater Awards to be held in New York City, June 24-30, 2013.  The Overture’s TOMMY Awards Program is one of 30 programs participating nation-wide.  One male and female Outstanding Lead Performer who were awarded a 2013 TOMMY Award in the Leading Performer category will be selected through a special audition to be held later in May.  Winners will be announced at the TOMMY /awards on June 3. 

Sixth-grade students from Nature Hill Intermediate School invite the community to participate in their Has The Dream Been Realized? program and parade.

The project began as students and teachers discussed the upcoming 50th anniversary of the famous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speech, "I have a dream," made at a pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement. They asked, "Has the dream been realized," and the event evolved.

Students presented their idea to Oconomowoc City Hall, and obtained permission to proceed.

Has The Dream Been Realized? will take place Wednesday, May 22 beginning at the City Beach. From 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., Nature Hill Intermediate School will present songs, poems, essays and dramas. At 1:15 p.m., the group will encourage everyone gathered to join them in a special parade - the OconomoWalk for Freedom - as they process toward Fowler Park.

Director of Research, Technology and Assessment for the Oconomowoc Area School District, Dr. Derick Kiger, received news from Newsweek that Oconomowoc High School is on their 2013 list of the best high schools.

Rohrer Wins U.S. Department of State Scholarship to Study in Morocco

OHS junior, Genevieve Rohrer, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for 2013-2014. The NSLI- Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.

The NSLI-Y scholarship enables Genevieve to study Modern Standard Arabic and Darija (colloquial Moroccan Arabic dialect) this summer in Rabat, Morocco at the Qalam wa Lawh Center. The scholarship covers all program costs including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; language testing; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; meals; and accommodations.

Through her participation in the program, Genevieve will serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community.

OHS Senior Isabella Moncatch was honored with a Rotary Scholarship Award on April 22.

Isabella plans to attend UW-Waukesha in fall. OHS counselor Susan Verhagen said Isabella is a “student who brightens your day, and is one of the kindest students I’ve ever met.”

Isabella experienced significant loss when the grandparents who had raised her died within a few months of each other. Isabella’s mother then suffered a serious illness and was hospitalized for a month. Isabella became caregiver for her younger siblings as her mother recuperated.

“Thanks for this blessing,” Isabella told Rotarians. “I experienced a devastating time with my family. But I met so many kindhearted people. This means the world to me.” 

Oconomowoc Rotary awards students who have risen above challenges, and who have overcome obstacles in their personal or academic pursuits. Students use the funds toward continuing education

Mark your calendar and hope for warm weather. Grilling2Give is back on Thursday, May 23 from 12:10 to 2:40 p.m. at Oconomowoc High School.

On the menu will be burgers, hotdogs, brats and chips for $5. Cookies and other treats will also be for sale!

This year's beneficiary is "DryHootch" which hosts meetings, therapy sessions and support groups to help veterans and their families with PTSD. Helping veterans and their families who survived the war to survive peace. 

Last year, $6100 was raised for the Susan G Komen Foundation and Lake Area Free Clinic.

See Mrs. Hett in 6th Grade or Mrs. Corbe in the office.  You must have a physical on file before try outs.  See the attached information.

Try-outs will be held the week of May 27th (starting May 28th).

Do not delay getting a current physical. 

Athletes are required to give their coach a RED CARD on the first day of practice in order to participate in a sport.  2013-14 Red cards will be issued beginning July 29, 2013, from 7:30am - 1:30pm in the OHS Athletic Department. 

**Athletes will need to pay their athletic fee online PRIOR to picking up a red card - please plan accordingly.  CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  Click here to view a tutorial on how to pay online fees.

To receive a RED CARD for the 2013-2014 school year students must have completed and turned in the following to the athletic office:

**When all of the above is handed in and complete the Athletic Department will issue a red card. The athlete will then give the red card to their coach to show that they are approved to play.

This year Wisconsin raised the WKCE scores needed for students to reach the Basic, Proficient, and Advanced performance levels in reading and math. As a result, WKCE results show a significant decline in the number of students considered to be “Proficient” or “Advanced.” This does not reflect a change in the abilities of students, teachers, or schools, but rather reflects the higher standards and aspirations Wisconsin has for its students and schools. The new, more rigorous scoring standards match those in other high performing states and will help prepare all Wisconsin students to be college and career ready.

♦WKCE Results and Scorecards

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released statewide proficiency scores on April 23, 2013. OASD demonstrated higher levels of math proficiency compared to the statewide rate (WI=48%, OASD=65%). Oconomowoc students also demonstrated a higher rate of reading proficiency compared to their Wisconsin peers (WI=36%, OASD=42%). ♦WKCE to be replaced by Smarter Balanced Assessments in 2014-15

New "Smarter Balanced" computer-adaptive tests that include multiple-choice questions, computer-enhanced items, and performance tasks will replace the WKCE in 2014-15. The system provides benchmark tools and formative strategies to guide instruction and provide classroom teachers with information. All components of the new state assessment system are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The new tests will also be given in the spring to provide a more summative snapshot of student learning. Click here for more information.

The 3M Foundation has donated $250 to CooneyTech Robotics in recognition of the Brian Bayer's commitment to the community.

Brian Bayer has donated 128 hours to CooneyTech Robotics. As a volunteer, he has offered many hours mentoring students and preparing drivers for competition. Bayer spent valuable time on game strategies and robot operation. Due to his efforts, CooneyTech was a Wisconsin Regional Champion in 2012 and a finalist at the 2013 Duluth Regional and the 2013 Wisconsin Regional.

"3M employees and retirees generously give their time and skills to help improve lives," said Kimberly Price, vice-president, 3M Community Affairs. "We are pleased to recognize their commitment to their commulnities."

As part of the 3M Volunteer Match, the 3M Foundation will donate $250 to eligible non-profit organizations for which a 3M employee volunteers 20 hours or a 3M retiree volunteers 25 hours or more per calendar year.
