International Baccalaureate at Oconomowoc High School
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme is a demanding and comprehensive two-year curriculum for highly motivated juniors and seniors. Students may complete individual IB courses or may fulfill a range of requirements and receive an IB Diploma in addition to their OHS diploma. The IB Diploma candidates engage in a well-rounded study of languages, sciences, mathematics, and humanities, along with involvement in their community. The Oconomowoc Area school District believes that the IB Programme should be available to all students and therefore allows any student with the motivation to learn, the opportunity to pursue either the IB Diploma or an IB Certificate.
The subjects that comprise the core of the IB curriculum are arranged in six groups. The intent is that students should learn how to analyze, how to reach thoughtful conclusions about people, their languages and literature, their ways in society, and the scientific forces of the environment. The program is a deliberate blend of depth and breadth. IB has a reputation for stimulating coursework and rigorous assessment standards.
IB provides an integrated education that links subject areas with carefully designed courses and content guided by the IBO. The IBO also provides teacher training and on-going oversight and assessment input from the international board. This perspective and support, along with the full diploma opportunity, makes IB a unique educational opportunity.
Students who enroll in the IB Diploma Programme or individual IB courses are extremely well prepared for university studies. Colleges and universities throughout the world regard IB students as very strong admission candidates and generally award significant college credit for successful IB work completed in high school.
