1.  What are the differences between online, hybrid, and web enhanced courses?
While all three fall under the umbrella of virtual schooling, fully online courses mean learning is done almost entirely online with little face to face time.  Hybrid courses combine face to face instruction with some online learning.  Web enhanced courses are primarily face to face instruction with resources, documents, and discussions accessed virtually to enhance the instruction.

2.  What type of student is best suited for hybrid or online options?

As in traditional settings, the level of support from teaching staff, peers, and family members greatly influences the success of students in virtual learning opportunities. Hybrid or fully online courses demand the same level of time and rigor as face-to-face instruction. The Oconomowoc Area School District is carefully designing coursework to offer options for all types of learners.
The following personal attributes will greatly contribute to student success:

  • Time management skills – time and place pacing options require students to carefully consider planning for instruction and coursework
  • Commitment – as in traditional settings, hard work and a personal commitment to succeed make a huge difference in learning outcomes
  • Effective communication skills – hybrid and fully online instruction with Web 2.0 tools offers, and requires, communication skills that go beyond written text. Video-chat, images, audio and written communication enhance the teaching and learning environment
3. Who is eligible to enroll in virtual classes?
All students who meet criteria and prerequisites to enroll in the courses are eligible for virtual courses.  *Parent permission is necessary for students to enroll in hybrid or fully online courses.
 
4. What are class sizes in virtual courses?
Class size in hybrid and fully online class sizes are similar to face-to-face offerings.
 
5. What impact will a virtual course have on a student's daily schedule?
Web enhanced courses will require students to physically attend classes.  Online participation is required on days classes don't meet face to face in hybrid classes.
 
6. Can my son/daughter take an “overload” of courses with virtual options? With parent and counselor permission students are permitted to take an overload of coursework with fully online courses. Keep in mind that while virtual options allow pacing and time flexibility the workload is comparable to a face-to-face class. Overloads are NOT recommended for students with busy schedules and difficult or time-consuming coursework. Hybrid courses cannot be taken as an overload.
 
7.  If my son/daughter doesn't have to physically be in class, can they work at school?
Students will be assigned a study hall during which they can complete their work for the virtual class or work on activities for another class.  Access to a school computer however, cannot be guaranteed.  Students may bring their own devices to school per OASD BYOD policy.
 
8.  Are students assessed and graded in a similar manner as traditional/face to face learning?
Courses follow standards, criteria, grading, and assessment practices aligned with traditional OHS courses.
 
9.  Will colleges and universities recognize the credit earned per course?
Credit is considered the same and not a determining factor for colleges and universities admitting students in programs of study.  In fact, many universities offer and require online learning.

10. What are the technical requirements to participate in virtual courses? A Learning Management System and Google Apps are the primary applications used for all courses and require minimal technical specifications. Virtual classrooms offer staff and students’ opportunities to teleconference, video or audio-chat, take web tours, and participate in local or international discussions. Additionally online discussions or presentations can be recorded and watched later. Google Apps will augment much of the work done in the Learning Management System as students access Google’s collaborative productivity tools and customizable applications. OHS will designate an in-school space with technology access for families wishing to participate but unable to meet the technical requirements outside of school
