Dear Communities of Oconomowoc High School and Waukesha West High School,

This Friday, September 1, 2017, our football programs will play each other for the first time in a Classic 8 match-up. There has been a lot of excitement building up around this contest over the past week; however, as a nation we have witnessed the destruction and devastation that Hurricane Harvey has had on the great state of Texas. In an effort to provide assistance, we will be organizing a fundraiser at Friday night’s game supporting the loss that families have suffered, and loss they will continue to recover from in the days ahead.

At the end of the 3rd quarter the OHS poms and cheerleading squads will enter the bleachers with buckets hoping to fill them with monetary aid for Hurricane Harvey victims. We will donate 100% of this bucket pass to national organizations heading up fund raising efforts which will provide relief to anyone who has suffered devastation. The athletic departments at Oconomowoc High School and Waukesha West High School appreciate your gracious generosity as we come together representing the good our communities offer.

If you cannot attend the game, both athletic departments will be accepting donations until next Wednesday, September 6. You can mail in your donation or drop your donation off at either high school’s athletic department. Please make checks out to OHS as we will send one check on behalf of both schools.

We look forward to a great night of football, but more importantly we are excited to see both teams committed to helping so many affected by this storm. Thank you!

OCONOMOWOC, WI – July 24, 2017.  The Oconomowoc Area School District announces today that Jay Benish has been named the new Head Boys Basketball coach at Oconomowoc High School.  Benish, who replaces Kurt Melton in that role, will be joining Silver Lake Intermediate School as a science teacher.

Coach Benish comes to Oconomowoc after serving the last ten years as head basketball coach at Jefferson High School.  Prior to his time in Jefferson, Benish served as an assistant basketball coach at Viterbo University from 2003-2007.  In addition to his teaching degree from Viterbo University, where he also was a basketball standout, he holds a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from UW-Lacrosse.

“After a long and extensive search, I am extremely pleased to be welcoming Coach Benish to Oconomowoc,” stated OHS Athletic Director Kevin Flegner.  “I know for everyone involved it has been a long process, but it was important to bring in a coach who checked all of the boxes that we had laid out from day one.  Jay is a tireless worker whose teams are very disciplined, tough, and fundamentally sound.”

Flegner went on to add that, “Jay brings a wealth of experience as both a former player and a head coach.  He comes from a basketball family, where he played high school basketball for his father who won over 200 games during his career at Wonewoc Center.  Jay also was an assistant football coach at Jefferson, believes strongly in the multi-sport athlete, and he is very excited about our Oconomowoc Power summer program and being a part of that as well.”

A meet and greet for parents and players is being planned for August.  More details on that event will follow.

OCONOMOWOC, WI – May 9, 2017.  The Oconomowoc Area School District announced today that Greg Malling has accepted the District’s offer to become the next head football coach at Oconomowoc High School.  Malling will be joining the faculty as an English teacher.

Coach Malling brings incredible depth and experience to his new role as OHS transitions next year to the Classic Eight conference.  His head coaching experience has included stops at Wootton High School in Maryland, Arrowhead High School, and most recently Coon Rapids High School in Minnesota.

Athletic Director Kevin Flegner stated, “I am very excited that Greg Malling has accepted the opportunity to be our next head football coach here at OHS.  Greg’s knowledge of the Classic Eight and the style of play that we will face night in and night out in that league will help us immediately in our transition.  His incredible work ethic, student-centered approach and his background in leadership and weight training will fit right into the great work that has already been established here.”

Flegner went on to state, “In following with the blueprint for success that our OASD administrative team has set, we will continue to seek out and hire the best available coaches regardless of what school they come from.”
