Preschool Screening Information

What is Preschool Screening?

State law requires your local school district to provide a screening program for preschool children. This screening is done free of charge and helps in the early identification of young children who may need specialized instruction. It is not a requirement for entry into four year-old or five year-old kindergarten.

The developmental screening is done by a preschool learning strategist and a speech / language pathologist. They will engage in activities with your child as well as talk to you in order to understand your child’s development. The areas assessed include: speech, language, motor, social, self-care and early learning skills. Your child’s hearing and vision will also be screened. The screening process takes approximately 30 minutes.

During the screening appointment, staff will talk with parents about their child’s strengths and, if necessary, areas that need to be improved. For children who demonstrate possible delays, the team will recommend next steps specific to the child. If needed, intervention programs are available through the school district at no charge to families.

If you want to discuss your child’s development or have questions about the screening, please call Valerie Pope, Preschool Screening Coordinator, at 262-560-8210.

We look forward to the beginning of a cooperative partnership between your family and the Oconomowoc Area School District.
