Originally built in 1956, portions of Ixonia Elementary School were renovated and expanded as part of the 2016 referendum. Enrollment projections at that time suggested limited growth in the Ixonia area due in part to the Town of Ixonia's wastewater treatment plant having limited capacity to support additional housing development.
Despite those projections, the Ixonia area has grown over the last five years and school enrollment has exceeded the functional capacity of Ixonia Elementary School. To meet the increase in students, the school has continued the use of two temporary modular classrooms and also uses spaces originally designed for small-group learning as permanent offices and instructional spaces.
The wastewater treatment plant will be expanding and is projected to be operational by 2025. Our recent enrollment study forecasts more growth in the Ixonia area because of the expanding sewer capacity which will generate more housing development.
This project would increase the number of classrooms at Ixonia Elementary so that there are 3 classrooms for each grade level and the space needed to provide additional four-year-old kindergarten programming like wrap-around-care, similar to other elementary schools.
This addition would fit seamlessly into the current school footprint because the space for this addition was originally considered in the 2016 building project. The HVAC and septic systems at Ixonia were updated during the 2016 referendum projects and will accommodate the proposed addition. Updates and additions to those systems would not be needed.
